- Biden: “They have no sense of American foreign policy”.
- The U.S. has provided Ukraine with $17.6 billion in the military and humanitarian aid since Russia’s invasion.
- House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said his party will not issue a “blank check” to war-torn Ukraine if it wins control of the House.
President Joe Biden attacked rival Republicans on Thursday for hinting that U.S. support for Ukraine could be reduced after November’s midterm elections.
“They said that if they win they’re not likely to fund, to continue to fund Ukraine,” Biden remarked during a Pennsylvania campaign stop.
“These guys don’t get it. It’s a lot bigger than Ukraine. It’s Eastern Europe. It’s NATO. It’s really serious, serious consequential outcomes.
“They have no sense of American foreign policy.”
Senior Republican Kevin McCarthy stated on Tuesday that his party will not issue a “blank check” to war-torn Ukraine if it achieves the widely anticipated wins in the midterm elections.
The warning was the first formal indication that Kyiv could face a more difficult fight for US aid as it fends off Russia’s invasion, as bipartisan support in Washington is beginning to weaken.
McCarthy intends to become House speaker, the third-highest political office in the United States after the president and vice president, if Republicans win control of the House of Representatives in the November 8 election.
Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion in February, the United States has provided Ukraine with $17.6 billion in military aid, although this is only a portion of the entire cost when humanitarian help is included.
