ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear a contempt petition against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan for announcing to hold a long march to Islamabad.
The Ministry of Interior has submitted a contempt of court petition against the PTI chief for over his call for a long march to the federal capital. The apex court has fixed the case for hearing on Thursday, October 20.
A five-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial comprising of Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, and Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar will hear the case.
In the petition, the federal government has urged the Supreme Court to initiate a contempt case against PTI chairman Imran Khan over his call to launch a long march towards Islamabad.
The petition argued that the former prime minister was making announcements regarding the march toward Islamabad in violation of a court order. It asked the top court to direct the PTI chairman to ensure the implementation of its orders related to protests and sit-ins in the federal capital.
The former prime minister directed his party leaders and supporters to wait for his final call for the “Haqeeqi Azadi” march against the government. However, he has not announced the final date but insisted it will be held within October.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies and federal administration have chalked out a comprehensive strategy to thwart PTI long-march. The capital administration have collected more than 1,100 containers which are being placed across the city.
The federal cabinet has also approved funding of Rs410 million to the Interior Ministry to halt the possible long march by PTI. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has also threatened the PTI from holding the long march saying the consequences will be worse the May 25 long march.
Imran Khan has been adamant and warned the interior minister that should be worried because the PTI will be marching towards Islamabad with full preparation this time. He has also said the long march can be called off if the government announces snap polls.
