MQM-P leaders meet PM, hint at quitting coalition govt

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and discussed the political situation.

Newly-appointed Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and MQM-P convenor Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui met with the prime minister and expressed reservations over being part of the coalition government.

The MQM-P delegation also raised concerns over the implementation of the Karachi agreement. According to reports, the MQM-P leaders said the party suffered irreparable damage due to the non-implementation of their demands.

They said that if the incumbent government cannot meet their demands, then there is no justification for the MQM-P to be part of the unity government.

The prime minister assured to solve their problems by talking to the leadership of the PPP. He also reassured to resolve the issues of the citizens of Sindh. MQM-P leaders said they will not be part of the government if the demands are not fulfilled.

MQM-P leaders Faisal Sabzwari and Waseem Akhtar were also present while Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and PML-N leaders Khawaja Saad Rafiqe and Ayaz Sadiq also participated in the meeting.

After witnessing no progress in the implementation of the political deal with the PPP, the MQM-P has once again hinted at quitting the Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government.

It was earlier reported that the MQM-P is considering quitting the ruling coalition after stalled progress on the agreement with the PPP and amendments to the local bodies bill.

MQM-P had also announced to convene a meeting of all party leaders at the Governor House which was cancelled. MQM-P leaders have expressed their frustration over lack of progress on the political deal and being part of the coalition government.

It is pertinent to mention here that an 18-point agreement was reached between the PPP and MQM-P after the latter quit the Imran Khan-led coalition government.

The ‘Charter of Rights’ agreement was signed by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and MQM-P’s Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, while Shehbaz Sharif, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Akhtar Mengal and Khalid Magsi signed the agreement as guarantor.
