A “suspicious parcel” was discovered this morning, leading to the lockdown of Whitehall and the evacuation of its residents.
After being asked to leave their premises and the area being cordoned off, hundreds of people congregated in the area behind Downing Street known as Horse Guards Parade.
The barrier has been lifted, and employees are now free to go back to their desks after police evaluated the object and determined it to be “non-suspicious.”
All people and cars had been prohibited from using the roads leading from Parliament Square past Downing Street to the Cenotaph.
While the suspicious object was examined, people were advised to stay away from the area.
Some of the government buildings along Whitehall, according to a government official, are being vacated.
“Specialist officers have evaluated the item at #Whitehall and it has been pronounced non-suspicious,” the Metropolitan Police stated.
“The barricade has been removed.” I appreciate your patience.
They had earlier announced that the security situation had caused the central London regions to be cordoned off.
‘Police were alerted at 11.42am on October 18 to allegations of a suspicious parcel in #Whitehall,’ a spokesperson stated.
Officers are there, and a cordon has been set up out of caution. The item will be evaluated by police with expertise. The location should be avoided.
Journalist Ben Bloch tweeted: “A police officer tells me Parliament Street is closed due to a “suspect package.”
“Everything is cordoned off and being evacuated.”
