Google has released tool to erase personal information from search results

  • Users can now click the three dots menu in each search result to remove PII.
  • If they want to take it down, they’ll have to give a reason.
  • Some Android users can tap on their profile picture in the top right corner.

Specifically, Google has begun rolling out a new feature that will assist users in removing personally identifiable information (PII) from search engine results pages, which should help users increase their online privacy.

Some Android users can tap on their profile picture in the top right corner of the screen when they open the Google app. There, they’ll find a new menu item called “Results about you.” When they click on that menu item, they are taken to a new page that tells them how to ask Google to remove personally identifiable information from search results. This information includes things like email addresses, phone numbers, and more.

Users who find PII can now click the three dots menu in each search result. There, they’ll find a new tool called “Remove result.” If they want to take it down, they’ll have to give a reason, like “it shows my personal contact information,” “it has illegal information,” or “it’s out of date.”

Google first announced the new tool in May 2022 at its I/O 2022 conference, where it said it would be available “in the coming months.” It has now started rolling out to some users in Europe and the US.

It also said how it decides which requests to accept and which to turn down: “It’s important to know that when we get requests to remove something, we’ll look at all the content on the page to make sure we’re not taking away access to other useful information, like news articles. Even if you remove contact information from Google Search, it will still be on the web. If you’re comfortable doing so, you may want to contact the hosting site directly.
