Phil Mickelson says The LIV Golf Series is “here to stay”, as he called PGA Tour to work with the Saudi-backed series to achieve advantage.
The breakaway circuit debuted in June and boasts 12 major champions among its players, but the PGA Tour has implemented significant modifications, like as higher prizes and an earnings assurance programme, in an effort to neutralize the threat.
The PGA Tour no longer accepts players that participated in the LIV series.
“The PGA Tour, for the last 20 or 30 years have had all the best players in the world. That will never be the case again. LIV Golf is here to stay,” Mickelson told reporters after carding two-under 70 in the opening round of the LIV event in Chicago on Friday.
“The best solution is for us to come together. I think that the world of professional golf has a need for the old historical ‘history of the game’ product that the PGA Tour provides. I think that LIV provides a really cool, updated feel that is attracting a lot younger crowds…
Both are advantageous to the game of golf, and LIV Golf’s integration into the industry is essential. As soon as that occurs, we all begin cooperating. Everyone will benefit greatly from it, the 52-year-old American continued.
Dustin Johnson, a two-time major champion from the United States, started the first round at Rich Harvest Farms with a three-shot lead after shooting 63 to finish at nine under par.
three in the world Australian Cameron Smith finished second at six under, one shot ahead of Matthew Wolff, who finished third.
