  • Monkeypox causes symptoms similar to but milder than smallpox, including fever, headache, and rashes.

The Chinese city of Chongqing reported one case of monkeypox virus infection in a foreign visitor, marking mainland China’s first known monkeypox infection amid the recent global outbreak of the virus.

The risk of transmission is low because the individual was quarantined upon arrival in Chongqing, according to a statement from the municipal health commission. All close contacts have been isolated and are being monitored by medical personnel.

According to the statement, the person in question entered Chongqing city in transit from abroad and displayed symptoms such as a skin rash during their COVID quarantine period.

Around 90 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the viral disease, which has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization. More than 60,000 confirmed cases have been reported, and some non-endemic countries have reported their first related deaths.

The monkeypox virus, which is spread through close contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated materials, causes symptoms similar to but milder than smallpox, including fever, headache, and rashes.
