- Arsenal beat Brighton to open Women’s Super League season.
- Brighton lost Emma Kullberg to straight red card after she hauled down Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius.
- Mead concluded England’s successful Euro 2022 campaign as the competition’s top scorer.
The Women’s Super League began on Friday at a sold-out Meadow Park, with Arsenal dominating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 behind two goals from England star Beth Mead.
The season had just been going for seven minutes when Brighton lost Emma Kullberg to a straight red card after she hauled down Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius. Last week’s games had been postponed owing to the death of Queen Elizabeth.
This made it more difficult for the visitors, and Kim Little gave the Gunners the lead in the 28th minute. Five minutes after the break, Blackstenius scored with the help of a pass from Mead.
Mead scored twice in the 63rd and 83rd minutes to seal the victory for Arsenal, who came second to champions Chelsea previous season. Mead concluded England’s successful Euro 2022 campaign as the competition’s top scorer.
