Taylor Swift claimed on Friday that movies, even ones from fifty years ago, have an impact on the direction of her music videos and songwriting.
She acknowledged early 1970s Hollywood as one of her influences when she took the stage at the Toronto International Film Festival to talk about the short film she made for her popular song “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)”.
Swift cited “The Way We Were” by Barbra Streisand from 1973 as an inspiration for how she shared the personalities of the characters in her 10-minute short. Katie’s apartment in that movie served as Swift’s inspiration. The romantic drama “Love Story,” from 1970, served as the inspiration for the lighting.
During a conversation with festival CEO Cameron Bailey, Swift stated, “When I think of that film, I think of autumn and I was trying to build that in the earlier parts of the film.”
Swift wanted it to feel warmer when the main characters, Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, were in love and used lighting to help the viewer understand what they were meant to feel as an audience, while she wanted it to feel cooler when they were fighting in the apartment. In the end, Swift said, it felt like a combination of the two.
She has transformed as a result of this experience, and the lighting reflects that, according to Swift.
She claimed that “Bad Blood” pays homage to the spy thriller genre and that her music video “The Man” pays homage to “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
The 35mm film premiere of “All Too Well: A Short Film” took place at the Toronto festival.
Swift remarked, “I feel that watching it on 35mm there is a depth, there is a contrast. It’s a unique experience,
On social media, some bemoaned how tough it was to secure tickets to one of the festival’s most sought-after events.
Emily Zeppieri, 24, who drove to Toronto from Whitby, Ontario, and had to leave her house at 3:45 a.m., said, “I tried so hard to acquire tickets but they were impossible to get, so I thought, “Let’s camp out at 5 a.m.”
Jess, whom she had met on Friday, was seated next to Emily on the pavement. They became friends over their shared love of Swift and their frantic search for tickets. Regardless of whether they saw Swift, the others in the line down the block were friendly and shared tales of the lifelong connections they had built.
Zeppieri recalled how they took turns using the restroom and getting meals. Everyone in line kept an eye on one another’s backs.
