The Basmanny Court in Moscow invalidated the registration certificate for the print version of Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia’s last independent newspapers, on Monday.

According to state news agency RIA Novosti, Judge Olga Lipkina ruled “to invalidate the registration of Novaya Gazeta.”

Outside court, Dmitry Muratov, a Nobel Peace laureate for his efforts to protect critical news reporting in Russia, called the ruling “a political hit job with no legal basis.”

He stated that the paper would file an appeal.

The editorial team referred to this as a “attempted murder of Novaya Gazeta” in a statement published on the website.

Rozkomnadzor, Russia’s media watchdog, had accused the publication of failing to provide documents relating to a change of ownership in 2006.

Novaya Gazeta, a stalwart of Russia’s media scene since its inception in 1993 with funds from late Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s Nobel Peace Prize, had carved out a niche as Russia’s leading investigative outlet, even as press freedoms were dwindling.
