Russia deploys hypersonic missile-armed jets to Kaliningrad says State media

  • Russia has deployed three MiG-31 fighter jets equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles to Kaliningrad.
  • In mid-March, Russia used the missiles for the first time in combat.
  • Kinzal missiles are invisible and invulnerable to any means of enemy air defense and anti-missile defense.

Russia has sent three fighter jets equipped with hypersonic missiles to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

“Three MiG-31 aircraft with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles have been deployed to the Kaliningrad Region as part of additional strategic deterrence measures,” the MoD said on Thursday, according to RIA.

“The Ministry of Defense previously explained that Kinzhal missiles are invisible and invulnerable to any means of enemy air defense and anti-missile defense,” RIA reported.

In mid-March, Russia used the missiles for the first time in combat.

However, Western military experts have downplayed its significance, with the UK defence ministry claiming that the Kinzhal missile is simply an air-launched version of Russia’s Iskander short-range ballistic missile (SRBM), which it has used numerous times in its conflict with Ukraine.
