- Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga rejects as “null and void” the result of presidential election.
- His comments come minutes after four of the seven election commissioners disowned the result.
- They said the final tallying process had been “opaque”.
The leader of Kenya’s opposition, Raila Odinga, denounced as “null and void” the results of the presidential contest he was pronounced the loser on Tuesday, saying that Kenya’s democracy is currently experiencing a protracted legal crisis.
Minutes after four of the seven election commissioners declared they stood by their decision to reject the presidential election result made the day prior, stating the final tallying process had been “opaque,” he made his first comments on the outcome.
The figures announced by (electoral commission chairman Wafula) Chebukati, in our opinion, are invalid and should be overturned in court, said Odinga, who was launching his sixth presidential campaign.
He declared, “What we witnessed yesterday was a travesty.” “No one should try to impose their own laws.”

On Monday, Chebukati pronounced William Ruto, the incumbent deputy president, the victor with 50.49% of the vote to Odinga’s 48.5%. Juliana Cherera, his deputy, and the other three commissioners had earlier denied the results to the media in a separate setting.
Speaking on behalf of the organisation on Tuesday, Cherera said that the results that gave Ruto a slim victory had been incorrectly aggregated and charged Chebukati with disregarding their inquiries about the final total. She claimed that the elections had been done correctly.
Chebukati and the four commissioners who disagreed with him did not answer when Reuters asked them for comment.
Before mounting the podium, Odinga televised the news conference of the commission’s dissident members from his own location.
