After a car chase in Liberty City on Monday night, a Miami-Dade police detective was shot in the head; the alleged shooter was killed during the altercation with police, according to the authorities.
The detective, who belonged to the Robbery Intervention Detail, was taken by ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
A Miami-Dade police public relations officer indicated late Monday night that the officer was still fighting for his life; despite multiple law enforcement sources telling the Herald that he had not survived his injuries.
Alfredo Ramirez, the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, spoke to media shortly after midnight on Tuesday; while being flanked by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
Ramirez stated, “He was shot by an armed individual while defending his community. We need everyone in the neighbourhood to rise up together and pray.

A number of South Florida police officers had congregated outside Jackson just hours after the event; several of them obviously upset. Steadman Stahl, head of the Miami-Dade Police Union, admitted, “It’s not looking good.”
The detective is in his late 20s and has not yet been officially identified by the department as of early Tuesday morning. The culprit, who is also still unidentified, was shot dead; and his body was left behind in Liberty City.
The RID unit of the department patrols high-crime areas with detectives driving unmarked police cars; frequently apprehending fugitives or those suspected of committing violent crimes.
The suspect’s white automobile had reportedly been linked to an earlier armed robbery at a convenience store in Dania Beach. Later, investigators located the white automobile at a Miami Springs motel.
RID stopped the vehicle on Monday night at the intersection of Northwest 62nd Street and 17th Avenue, but the man inside the vehicle resisted being let out. The individual was described by police as a “barricaded subject.”
