Man’s disappearance prompts murder probe

  • A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering missing Cookstown man Damien Heagney.
  • Police believe that he was murdered and have launched a murder investigation.
  • He was reported missing from Cookstown in July, but it was initially treated as a missing persons case.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Damien Heagney, a missing man from County Tyrone.

The disappearance of the 47-year-old was initially reported as a missing person case.

The PSNI has stated that they now believe he was murdered and have launched a murder investigation.

Mr Heagney of Cookstown went missing in July, but police have since determined that he was last seen on New Year’s Eve.

On Saturday, they arrested a 50-year-old man following a search in Cookstown.

“On 19 July, police received a report that Damien was missing. Whilst I’m keeping an open mind, I now believe that Damien has sadly been murdered,” said Det Ch Insp Rachel Wilson.

She also stated that Mr Heagney was last seen in the early hours of December 31, 2021 in Dromore, County Tyrone.

After a search of the property, the arrested man was detained.

Anyone with information about Mr Heagney’s disappearance is asked to contact detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team.

Mr Heagney was described as 5’10” tall and stocky in build.
