The California Highway Patrol says they have arrested a woman who they say caused a crash that killed five people, including a pregnant woman, on Thursday in Los Angeles County.
Highway Patrol said in a statement that the driver, 37-year-old Nicole Lorraine Linton, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. She is being charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
The police said that Linton is from Houston, but she worked as a nurse in the area.
The CHP said in a statement that the driver was going “very fast” in a Mercedes-Benz when it ran a red light and crashed into oncoming traffic in the Windsor Hills neighbourhood southwest of downtown Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon.
“As a result of this collision, multiple parties were ejected and two vehicles were fully engulfed in flames,” the CHP stated.
Highway Patrol says that five people were found dead at the scene and that eight others were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The pregnant woman was named by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office as 23-year-old Asherey Ryan. Her unborn child and her 11-month-old son both died in the accident. Officials said they still didn’t know who her son was.
