Aznil Bidin, the 28-year-old’s gold medal was assured as soon as he lifted 127 kg in his first snatch attempt at National Exhibition Centre.

In the clean and jerk, Aznil, who unexpectedly won the men’s 62kg gold in Gold Coast four years prior, secured the victory with 158 kg.

His total weight of 285kg put him in first place, ahead of Baru (273kg) and India’s P. Gururaja (269kg), but it was less than his personal best of 287kg, which he set earlier this year in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Following Aniq Kasdan’s victory in the men’s 55kg weight division earlier in the day, it was Malaysia’s second weightlifting gold medal.
The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) had predicted one gold and two silver medals for the 2022 tournament, however their performance exceeded those projections.
The fact that Muhamad Aznil, 28, was able to successfully defend the gold medal he had won in the 2018 edition at the Gold Coast, Australia, was evidence of his strength in the weightlifting sport.
