Pakistan women’s team lost by 15 runs against Barbados in CWG opener

  • Pakistan lost their 1st match against Barbados.
  • Nida scored unbeaten 51 runs off 31 balls.
  • Pakistan will play against India on August 5.

On Friday in Birmingham, half-centuries from Hayley Matthews and Kycia Knight helped Barbados defeat Pakistan by 15 runs to open their Commonwealth Games campaign.

Barbados achieved 144 for 4 after being summoned to bat, thanks to their 107-run partnership for the second wicket after losing their explosive opener Deandra Dottin for 8 off 5 balls. Kycia, the wicketkeeper-batsman for Barbados, scored an undefeated 62 off 56 balls with nine fours in her second T20I fifty. Matthews batted with restraint, scoring 51 runs off 50 balls, including four fours and a six. It was her fifth fifty in T20I.

Pakistan medium pacer In the 18th over, Fatima Sana broke the century stand by catching Matthews behind. Sana also dismissed Kyshona Knight in the final over of the innings, bringing his final tally to 2 for 41.

Iram Javed was caught behind Shamilia Connell with the opening ball of Pakistan’s chase as they attempted to reach a target of 145. Pakistan lost openers Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail within the first nine overs, while captain Bismah Maroof’s laborious innings of 12 runs off 28 balls ended when she was run out in the eleventh over.

At 40 for 3 in the ninth over, with Pakistan sorely needing momentum, veteran all-rounder Nida Dar upped the ante with an unbeaten 50 off 31 balls, her seventh T20I half-century. Due to Aliya Riyaz’s poor performance at the other end (14 runs off 24 balls), Pakistan was unable to keep up with the needed run rate and ultimately fell short by 15 runs. Barbados’ Connell, Aaliya Allene, Matthews, and Dottin each grabbed a wicket.

Pakistan will next face India on Friday, while Barbados will take on Australia on Sunday.
