It is not clear what happened when someone attacked a prison camp in occupied eastern Ukraine. Both Ukraine and Russia say that dozens of Ukrainian war prisoners were killed. But that’s pretty much all they agree on.
Russia says that eight of its prison staff were hurt when US-made rockets fired from Ukraine hit the prison.
Russian video from the scene in Olenivka, which hasn’t been confirmed, shows badly burned bodies among the ruins of what look like sleeping quarters.
But Ukraine tells a different story. They say that Russia destroyed the prison to hide proof that prisoners of war were tortured. It says that the video wasn’t the result of a strike, but of arson after a mass killing.
Paul Adams, our Diplomatic Correspondent, says that an independent investigation is the only way to find out what’s going on. It’s not likely that this will happen.
