Teen surfer from New York is bit by a shark off a beach on Long Island

  • A shark bit a teen surfer on his right foot near a Long Island beach.
  • The teen was able to get out of the water and walk away.
  • A 41-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark off Shirley, New York, last week.

On Wednesday, a shark attacked a 16-year-old surfer close to a Long Island beach; adding to the recent spate of shark attacks in the waters surrounding New York.

Around 5:45 p.m., the young man was paddling about 20 yards off Kismet Beach on Fire Island; when a shark bit his right foot, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Police claimed the boy was able to walk out of the water on his own despite having a 4-inch cut on his foot. At the time of the incident, there were no lifeguards on duty.

The adolescent was taken urgently for treatment to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center; in West Islip by Saltaire Fire Rescue. There was no current information about the surfer’s health.

According to the agency, police used a helicopter to look for the shark; but they were unable to see it because of the muddy water. Officers from the Suffolk County Marine Bureau were still using a boat to look for the shark.

The event is the most recent in a succession of shark encounters this summer along Long Island beaches.

At Smith Point County Park in Shirley, a shark bit a 41-year-old surfer on his left leg; approximately 12 yards from shore last week. This is the same area of water where a lifeguard was bitten by a shark on July 3; while participating in a training exercise.
