An eagle ray weighing 400 pounds swam up to an Alabama family’s boat while they were taking part in a fishing competition, and the family ended up reeling in an exceptionally unusual catch.

April Jones, who is from Saraland, stated that she and her family were taking part in the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo when the enormous ray jumped out of the water and landed on their boat, hitting April Jones in the shoulder. April Jones was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.

Jones and her family said that the ray, which measured five feet in length, was carrying a litter of young.

The boat belonged to the family, and they needed assistance getting it back into the water, so they took it to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.

Marcus Drymon, a researcher at Mississippi State University, said that sightings of eagle rays in the Dauphin Island area are quite uncommon.

The experience that the Jones family had with a variety of fish prompted Drymon to tell the media, “We have an extraordinary diversity of fishes here in the north-central Gulf of Mexico and it’s a rare and exciting opportunity.”
