WhatsApp now supports iOS-to-Android chat transfers

  • Previously only third-party apps were able to transfer chat history between ecosystems.
  • Only the Android to iPhone option is available on WhatsApp’s support site.
  • You must utilise the Move to iOS app on Android to transfer chats from Android to iOS.

WhatsApp had been testing the transfer of chat histories between Android and iOS, and has now made the feature official. Until now, it was only possible to transfer conversation history between ecosystems via third-party data transfer solutions, which are typically not free and are difficult to use.

As of this writing, only the Android to iPhone option is available on WhatsApp’s support site, and you must utilise the Move to iOS application on Android. Additionally, you will need the most recent version of WhatsApp on both the transmitting and receiving smartphones. Before transferring, you must also utilise the same phone number as your old phone or change it. Additionally, the receiving iPhone must be new or factory reset.

Using the processes outlined in the instructions, WhatsApp has collaborated with Apple to successfully transfer WhatsApp data to an iOS device using the Move to iOS app. According to the support page, you can transfer your account information, profile photo, individual and group conversations, chat history, chat media, and WhatsApp settings. You cannot send WhatsApp call logs or peer-to-peer payment messages.

The inability to take WhatsApp conversations with you when moving between iOS and Android has long been a source of frustration for consumers jumping between ecosystems. Although many messaging apps allow access to messages and chats from any device, WhatsApp is only compatible with a single phone number and a single smartphone. Only lately has WhatsApp permitted linked devices to transmit and receive messages while the host device is offline.
