Russian shelling dies 6, Zelensky replaces security chief

KYIV, Ukraine: Six Ukrainians were killed by Russian shelling in battle-ravaged eastern Ukraine on Monday, Kyiv reported, as the country reeled from President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to dismiss two senior law enforcement officials.

In the meantime, EU foreign ministers met to talk about putting more sanctions on Moscow.

The leader of the EU’s foreign policy warned that Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea could have “life or death” consequences.

On Monday morning, Russian artillery shelled a two-story building in the industrial east of Toretsk, where blue-helmeted rescue workers could be seen sifting through debris and cleaning rubble from the collapsed structure.

“Rescuers found and recovered the bodies of five dead people in total. Three people were rescued from the rubble and one of them died in hospital,” The emergency services stated, adding that their rescue efforts were complete.

Toretsk is 50 km (30 mi) south of Kramatorsk, the main target for Russian forces sent into Ukraine in February.

They failed to conquer Kyiv early in the invasion but recently captured Lysychansk and Severodonetsk in the eastern Donbas.

On treason allegations, Zelensky fired Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova and Security Chief Ivan Bakanov.

In making the statement, he noted “a great number of crimes against the foundations of national security and the connections established between Ukrainian law enforcement officials and Russian special services.”
