Despite a stay of the case issued by a French court, the descendants of a 19th-century sultanate are attempting to seize Malaysian government assets all over the world in an effort to enforce a $14.9 billion arbitration award they won against the Southeast Asian country, according to their attorneys.

In order to resolve a legal issue involving a colonial-era property purchase, a French arbitration court ordered Malaysia to pay the amount to the lineal descendants of the last Sultan of Sulu in February.

After concluding that the award’s enforcement may violate the nation’s sovereignty, the Paris Court of Appeal delayed its decision, Malaysia announced on Wednesday.

The delay, according to law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, will stop the award from being implemented while Malaysia seeks to overturn the decision. Prior to this, Malaysia hadn’t taken part in the arbitration. View More

However, attorneys for the claimants assert that the February judgement is still enforceable outside of France under the New York Convention, an international arbitration agreement ratified by 170 nations.
