Viral Video: Mexico mayor marries alligator kisses bride after ceremony

  • The mayor of a small town in Mexico got married on Thursday to a seven-year-old alligator.
  • This is an old custom that is supposed to bring luck.
  • In San Pedro Huamelula, the alligator was dressed in a white wedding dress and other bright clothes.

The mayor marries the alligator, who was dressed as a bride with a white dress and veil, in a colourful ceremony. People danced while traditional music played in the background. They begged the native leader to kiss the bride and groom to seal the marriage.

A video is going viral. In it, Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa of San Pedro Huamelula can be seen bending over to kiss the small alligator’s snout, which was tied shut to keep it from biting people.

Watch the video:

Before the Spaniards came, Chontal and Huave people who lived in the state of Oaxaca probably did this ritual marriage for hundreds of years. It’s almost like asking nature to give them a lot.

Sosa, the mayor of the small fishing village on the steamy Pacific coast of Oaxaca, said, “We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river.”

Oaxaca is a small fishing village in the poor south of Mexico. It is considered to have the richest indigenous culture in the country because it is home to many groups that have stubbornly kept their languages and traditions.

In San Pedro Huamelula, the alligator or caiman is dressed in a white wedding dress and other bright clothes as part of an old ritual that is now mixed with Catholic spirituality.
