No Temba Bavuma as SA prepares for multiformat England tour

Temba Bavuma, who suffered an elbow injury in the just-finished series against India, will miss the upcoming tour of England. He would need eight weeks to recover. David Miller and Keshav Maharaj have been appointed as stand-in captains for the T20I and ODI series, respectively, in his absence.

Three One-Day Internationals will be followed by three Twenty20 Internationals before a three-match ICC World Test Championship series. The tour begins on July 19.

Gerald Coetzee, a 21-year-old uncapped fast bowler, and Rilee Rossouw, who last played for South Africa on the international level in 2016, are two notable additions to the T20I squad.

“The T20 format is a high priority for us at the moment,” said selection convener Victor Mpitsang. “We are looking to give opportunities to players that we are interested in seeing and working out the best combinations, while also trying to balance our desire to maintain enough consistency within the set-up that the players are used to playing together as a team by the time they reach Australia for the World Cup.”

Tristan Stubbs, who made his international debut earlier this month against India, has retained his position after Kagiso Rabada was rested for the ODI series.

South Africa are second in the WTC rankings with a 71.43 victory %, following the leader, Australia.
