Despite her opposition to abortion, Pelosi takes communion at the Vatican

  • Nancy Pelosi receives Communion during a papal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • She was seated in a VIP section and received Communion along with the rest of the congregants.
  • Her home archbishop has said he will no longer allow her to receive the sacrament.

Despite her opposition to abortion, Pelosi takes communion at the Vatican; on Wednesday and took communion during a papal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, according to witnesses. Pelosi was there as Francis presented newly created archbishops; with the woollen pallium stole at the morning Mass; commemorating the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul. According to two persons who were present; she was seated in a VIP diplomatic section and received Communion; alongside the other churchgoers.

Salvatore Cordileone, the archbishop of Pelosi’s native San Francisco; has said that due of her support for abortion rights; he will no longer permit her to receive the sacrament in his archdiocese. Conservative Cordileone has stated that Pelosi must either renounce her support for abortion; or quit expressing her Catholic faith in public.

Pelosi is guilty of neither. She referred to the recent Supreme Court decision; eliminating constitutional safeguards for abortion; as “outrageous and heartbreaking” and said it achieved the “dark and radical goal; of ripping away women’s freedom to choose their own reproductive health decisions;” of the Republican Party.

She has often expressed her Catholic religion in public; most recently during an Independence Day celebration on Tuesday evening; at the residence of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.

Pelosi discussed the Catholic virtues of faith, hope; and charity and the significant role they play in the mission of the U.S. Embassy; when addressing a group of ambassadors; Vatican officials, and other Americans living in Rome.

She reminded the assembly, “Faith is a vital gift; not everyone possesses it, but it is the way to so many other things.
