Ukraine conflict dominated NATO summit

  • NATO will increase the number of troops in high readiness and put more troops on its eastern flank.
  • Ukraine’s president will talk to the group through a video link.
  • NATO nations have already pledged billions of dollars in military aid to Kyiv, and will agree on a “complete assistance package”.

NATO leaders planned to invite Finland and Sweden to join the alliance on Wednesday, after Turkey withdrew its objections, as the group sought to bolster its defences at a summit dominated by the conflict in Ukraine.

More than four months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine upended the European security landscape, NATO commander Jens Stoltenberg has dubbed a summit in Madrid a “historic and transformative summit”  for the alliance’s future.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, will talk to the group through a video link. He will say again that Kyiv wants its allies to send arms quickly.

The NATO nations, which have already pledged billions of dollars in military aid to Kyiv, will agree on a “complete assistance package to Ukraine” to assist the country in upholding its right to self-defense.

Stoltenberg said, “We meet in the middle of the worst security crisis we’ve had since the Second World War.”

We will explicitly state that Russia poses a direct threat to our national security.

NATO will start the biggest change to its defence and deterrence capabilities since the end of the Cold War. It will do this by increasing the number of troops in high readiness and putting more troops on its eastern flank.

Andrzej Duda stated that “Russia now is an aggressor in Ukraine, Russia attacked Ukraine and Russia is a threat for Europe but not only for Europe, for all NATO.”

“This is very clear situation now.”
