46 migrants found dead near US city: police

At least 46 migrants were discovered dead in and near an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, according to authorities.

It was one of the worst things to happen to migrants in the U.S. in recent years, and it happened in the same place, a few hours from the Mexican border, five years after a similar death.

“At this time, we have processed approximately 46 bodies that have been triaged and tagged and declared deceased,” San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told reporters.

He stated that 12 adults and four children had been carried to the hospital while still aware and alive.

Hood stated, “The patients that we saw were hot to the touch, they were suffering from heat stroke, heat exhaustion, no signs of water in the vehicle, it was a refrigerated tractor-trailer but there was no visible working AC unit on that rig,

According to officials, three individuals were detained in connection with the event.

People smugglers use San Antonio, which is approximately 250 kilometres (150 miles) from the border, as a significant transit point.

The truck was discovered on a road along Interstate 35, a major US highway that runs all the way to the Mexican border.

At the scene, a large emergency operation involving police, firefighters, and ambulances was in progress.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who supports a firm stance on immigration, lashed out at President Joe Biden, blaming his “deadly open border policies” for the calamity.

“These deaths are on Biden,” tweeted Abbott. “They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

In 2017, 10 migrants died of starvation in a trailer whose air conditioning didn’t work and whose ventilation holes were blocked. They were trying to enter the United States through San Antonio.

Dozens more had been hospitalised with heat stroke and dehydration, with the truck estimated to have been carrying up to 200 people before it stopped in a parking lot with the majority of them fleeing.

“Lord have mercy on them. They hoped for a better life,” The archbishop of San Antonio, Gustavo Garcia-Siller, tweeted the news of Monday’s finding.

“Once again, the lack of courage to deal with immigration reform is killing and destroying lives.”
