One man was killed and three others were hospitalized early Sunday in Montreal after stabbings by a 26-year-old man who had a mental breakdown, according to Canadian police.

At 6:50 a.m. (10:50 GMT), police in Canada’s second-largest city responded to an emergency call “concerning a man in crisis” in a downtown Montreal apartment.

The suspect “stabbed with a sharp object” his mother and stepfather then stabbed another person in a neighboring apartment as well as a doorman who tried to intervene, police said in a statement.

The stepfather, aged 72, died at the scene while the three other victims were taken to hospital, where one remains in critical condition.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, said police.

Since 2017, Canada has seen an increase in violent attacks and mass killings, with 43 people killed and 38 injured.
