Trudeau promises to protect abortion rights worldwide. After what he called a “devastating setback” in the United States; Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged on Friday to defend abortion rights in Canada; and worldwide.
Trudeau criticised the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade; the 1973 decision that upheld the right to an abortion; saying, “Quite honestly, it’s an attack on everyone’s liberties and rights.”
From the Commonwealth conference in Kigali, Rwanda, Trudeau said, “It shows how much standing up and fighting for rights means every day; that we can’t take anything for granted.”

Mélanie Joly, Canada’s foreign affairs minister, joined Trudeau in Kigali. She described it as a “sad day”; warned that the decision will have “a domino effect on other rights,” added that no nation is safe from it; and charged the Conservatives of “hunting for anti-abortion votes.”
“After making his comments, Trudeau refused to answer any questions from reporters.
