The fight for control of the eastern Ukrainian cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk has reportedly reached a “terrifying climax,” according to a major advisor to the president of Ukraine.
According to Oleksiy Arestovych, Russian forces may soon be able to encircle the twin cities and shut them off from the rest of Ukrainian territory.
He indicated that there is a possibility that Russia would achieve a strategic win, but that it hasn’t happened yet.
This comes at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of attempting to “destroy” the Donbas area.

“There were several artillery and aerial strikes carried out in the Donbas region. The objective of the occupiers in this region has not changed; they intend to piecemeal destroy the entirety of the Donbas “According to the nightly video message given by Mr. Zelensky.
In addition to this, Assad reiterated his demands that the leaders of Western nations hasten the delivery of heavy artillery to his forces.
“We cannot stress the importance of this enough: the speeding of the delivery of armaments to Ukraine. It is imperative that both sides have an equal footing on the battlefield as soon as possible in order to halt this evil armada and drive it beyond the boundaries of Ukraine “he stated.
Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, the last Ukrainian outposts in the Luhansk region, have received a lot of Russian attention, and in recent days, Moscow’s forces appear to be making some headway in their endeavour to encircle Ukrainian troops there.
Serhiy Haidai, the regional governor, stated on Thursday that troops in the town of Zolote, which has been on the front lines of warfare since 2014, may be forced to retire because two important settlements to the south of the cities have been taken.
Russian soldiers have pushed over 5 km (3 miles) this week towards Lysychansk’s southern boundary, according to the UK Ministry of Defence’s daily briefing.
“In order to avoid being surrounded, some Ukrainian units have retreated. Russian effectiveness in this area has likely improved as a result of recent unit reinforcement and intense firepower “British officials claimed.
On Wednesday, Mr. Haidai claimed that Russian shelling in Lysychansk had “seriously harmed housing and infrastructure.”
Despite Moscow’s forces having taken control of much of the city, he continued, Severodonetsk is also shelled “every day.” There are still hundreds of stranded residents, many of whom have taken refuge at the huge Azot chemical facility.
