Instagram, a site owned by Meta, revealed on Thursday that it is experimenting with new techniques to confirm users’ ages.
According to Business Recorder, the photo/video sharing app announced that it is exploring two distinct methods that would enable users to prove their age online, beginning in the United States. Users of the software will also be able to upload their identities on the internet.

“When we know if someone is a teen (13-17 years), we provide them with age-appropriate experiences like defaulting them into private accounts, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don’t know and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them with ads.”- Director of data governance at Meta, Erica Finkle, said.
Instagram is collaborating with Yoti, an AI software that analyses a person’s face to determine their age.

Once users share a video selfie of themselves, Yoti will estimate their ages. The social media app stated that following age verification, the videos would be removed.
The second choice gives users the chance to choose three mutuals who will confirm the users’ ages. The verifying party, however, must be at least 18 years old.
The choice was made after Instagram received harsh criticism for introducing Instagram Kids following eventually resulting in discontinuation of the platform.
