- Lithuania has banned the rail transfer of some goods to Russia’s Kaliningrad region.
- Moscow says it is only following the EU sanctions imposed over Ukraine invasion.
- Secretary of Russia’s Security Council warns that “appropriate measures” will be taken in the near future.
Russia has threatened Lithuania as a result of the rail transport boycott. After prohibiting the rail transport of some commodities to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad; Russia has threatened Lithuania with “severe” consequences.
Russia “would undoubtedly retaliate to such unfriendly measures”; according to Nikolai Patrushev.
Lithuania claims it is just acting in accordance with EU sanctions implemented; in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
There is no boundary between Kaliningrad and continental Russia; which is where Russia’s Baltic Fleet is based.
After World War II, Germany acquired the western area; which EU and Nato members Lithuania and Poland sorround.

The region, which is home to an estimated one million people; is strongly reliant on Russian and European Union supplies of raw materials and replacement parts.
Mr Patrushev claimed the blockade by Lithuania was imposed by the West “in breach of international law.”
