EU has pledged $630 million to Africa, the Caribbean, and others

  • The funds include €150 million ($158m) in humanitarian assistance for African, Caribbean and Pacific nations.
  • Russia and Ukraine export nearly a third of the world’s wheat and barley.
  • War has prevented 20 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain; from getting to the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Asia.

EU has pledged $630 million to Africa, the Caribbean, and others; to assist vulnerable countries in overcoming a food security crisis caused by Russia Ukraine war.

The funds that EU pledged include €150 million in humanitarian aid for African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries; as well as €350 million to promote long-term food production.
“Russia’s war of aggression is taking a severe and senseless toll; not just on the Ukrainian people, but also on the world’s most vulnerable”; European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

“Russia continues to obstruct millions of tonnes of critically needed food”; “In order to avert a food catastrophe and an economic shock; we will mobilise an additional €600 million to assist our partners.”

Russia and Ukraine export about a third of the world’s wheat and barley; as well as more than 70% of the world’s sunflower oil.
