The famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant in Hong Kong has sinks in the South China Sea; less than a week after being taken away from the city; according to its parent company.

According to Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Ltd; The famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant in Hong Kong that sinks in the South China Sea; had  encountered “adverse conditions” on Saturday while passing the Xisha Islands; commonly known as the Paracel Islands, in the South China Sea; water entered the vessel, causing it to topple.

No one was hurt, but efforts to save the ship failed; and it capsized on Sunday, according to the firm.

“The water depth at the area is almost 1,000 metres; making salvage operations exceedingly challenging,” it stated in a statement.

The company is “deeply saddened by this accident,” according to the statement.

The Jumbo Floating Restaurant, which was about 80 metres (260 feet) long; it served Cantonese food to over 3 million people; including Queen Elizabeth II and Tom Cruise; has been an icon in Hong Kong for over four decades.

The restaurant became a financial burden to its stockholders; according to Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises; with millions of Hong Kong dollars spent on inspection and upkeep even though it was not in business.

Last Tuesday, the eatery was dragged away. The corporation stated that it intended to relocate it to a lower-cost location; where maintenance could be performed.
