Eugenio Derbez ready to “recreate” himself With ‘CODA

  • Derbez rose to fame in the early 2000s with Mexican sitcoms.
  • In 2013, he had a significant box office hit with “Instructions Not Included”.
  • He’s now a member of the CODA cast that won the SAG Award for the outstanding cast.

Eugenio Derbez, who rose to prominence in the early 2000s with Mexican sitcoms, had a significant box office hit in 2013 with “Instructions Not Included,” a comedy in which he co-wrote, directed, and starred as a playboy who is forced to care for his 6-year-old daughter.

In an interview with the media, Derbez states to the media that “Before Instructions Not Included, I was always in meetings with producers, directors, and executives, and with every idea that I brought, they were like, ‘You know, it’s too Latin for the general market,’ and they rejected my ideas.”

And, when he was able to meet with executives from every studio after the release of Instructions, the discussions he had even then were different than he had imagined.

He’s now a member of the CODA cast that won the SAG Award for the outstanding cast—he plays supportive high school choir instructor Bernardo Villalobos—and he stood on stage with his co-stars at the 2022 Oscars ceremony as the group accepted the award for best picture.

According to Derbez, “Definitely, CODA changed my career and my life in many ways.” He adds, “Nowadays, everyone in the industry, and also my core audience, perceive me in a different way. Thank God. Now I’m getting offered more dramatic roles, something that I would never have expected in the past. I’ve already done two dramas since then, so I’m happy that CODA is giving me the opportunity to reinvent myself here in the U.S. It’s not that I’m gonna stop doing comedy; it’s so that now I’m going to be able to also do dramas besides the comedy that I’m producing.”
