Joe Biden has made restoring democracy a top priority of his presidency. Surprisingly, he has had greater success outside of the United States thus far.
The President’s crowning success has been unifying Western democracies in support of Ukraine against Russia’s totalitarian assault.
Yet, within months, Biden’s political career soon overtaken by Republican opponents who are at best apathetic to the preservation of America’s democracy and at worst opposed to it.
The White House has seen the President’s support rating sink to levels that practically ensure the Democratic Party will lose control of one or both houses of Congress in the midterm elections, as a result of inflation, crime, and the lingering epidemic.

Biden’s performance in Ukraine reflects, in part, his capacity to steer foreign policy unilaterally as commander in chief.
Republicans have such a strong political position this year that they may not need to contest election results. However, Republican triumph this fall, like Biden’s win in 2020, will not end the battle to protect democratic institutions.
“It will raise the mountain we have to climb,” Bassin argues, “but we still have to conquer it.”
