An Iranian fighter jet crashed near the city of Isfahan when its engine failed, but both pilots escaped, according to media reports on Saturday.

The pilots were transported to a nearby hospital, according to the official Iranian news agency. As per reports, a mechanical malfunction in the Grumman F-14 Tomcat’s engine caused the accident.

A clip released by the agency shows columns of smoke rising from the aircraft’s wreckage in a barren region.

Iran’s air force acquired a variety of American-made military aircraft prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, including the American-made Tomcat F-14. It also includes MiG and Sukhoi aircraft built in Russia.

Because of years of Western sanctions, it’s hard to get replacement parts and keep the old planes running.

The faltering Iranian fleet has a history of similar accidents. Both pilots of a fighter plane that crashed in Iran’s central desert in May were killed.

In February, a fighter jet crashed onto a soccer field in the city of Tabriz in the country’s northwest, killing both pilots as well as a civilian.
