Dean Kremer threw six scoreless innings and youngster Adley Rutschman hit home the game’s only run in the seventh inning as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Friday night.
Kremer allowed five hits and equaled Tampa Bay’s Shane Baz’s six scoreless frames. Then, with one out, Ryan Mountcastle doubled off Calvin Faucher (0-1). Rutschman followed with a single to centre.
It was his fourth RBI in 23 games after hitting his first home run two days earlier in Toronto.
To earn the win, Félix Bautista (3-2) struck out the side in the seventh inning and retired all four hitters. After replacing Bautista, Cionel Pérez allowed two singles but struck out Vidal Bruján before giving way to Jorge López.
López struck out Yandy Daz for the third out in the eight, and struck out three more than in the ninth for his tenth save 12 chances.
Tampa Bay has been shut out six times this season, including the second time in the last four games.. The Rays are without shortstop Wander Franco (quadriceps), infielder Brandon Lowe (back), and catcher Mike Zunino (shoulder).
Baz surrendered just two hits and struck out seven on his 23rd birthday. Kremer struck out five with one walk and held Tampa Bay scoreless. The Rays have now equaled their season-long losing streak after being swept in three games by the AL East-leading Yankees.. Tampa Bay is 1-6 on its nine-game road trip.
