Tarren: British chap accepts lost clubs at U.S. Open

  • Callum Tarren flew into Boston from Toronto on Saturday.
  • His clubs didn’t arrive until the following day after being lost by a carrier.
  • The PGA Tour newbie shot a four-under-par 68 to share the lead at the U.S. Open.

Tarren momentarily held the performance lead after his falcon at the standard five eighth, his penultimate opening.

The 31-year-old Darlington local said individuals he remained with during last week’s Canadian Open, where he missed the cut days in the wake of meeting all requirements for the U.S. Open, went to the air terminal to give “a little kick” to the carrier staff.

“There was five different players on my flight. They all got golf clubs, so it was the second U.S. Open I’ve played in and second time no golf clubs,” Tarren told journalists after a three-under-standard 67 at The Country Club.

“This time I got them somewhat quicker than last. I didn’t really get them until Wednesday in Pebble Beach a couple of years prior, so that was a bad dream.”

The world number 445 is taking full advantage of his second significant title appearance as he went out in the first part of the day wave at The Country Club outside Boston and blended a falcon in with three birdies and two intruder.

“Clearly, that front part of the green is insane. I was truly mindful of that,” said Tarren. “So I picked a club that planned to fly center of the green, as a matter of fact, and like I say, I hit seven-iron downwind. It flew 200 yards and took care of off that slant to one side there, and it was simply great.”

Tarren, who entered the week tied for 187th on the PGA Tour in first-round scoring normal, doesn’t appear to be threatened by the course arrangement this week, a genuine U.S. Open test that highlights tight fairways, thick unpleasant and little greens.

“This green has a smidgen of a connections feel, so I’m accustomed to playing a great deal of connections golf back home, so I believe that is – – definitely, I’m quite agreeable over here,” said Tarren.

“You’ve actually had to execute golf chances consistently and be assembled consistently. I’m simply amped up for the following couple of days.”
