Eoin Morgan will rest for some of England’s limited-overs internationals this summer because to fitness worries, but he insists that he still believes he can “contribute to a World Cup success” in Australia this winter.
Morgan hurt his right quad in January after playing back-to-back games in Barbados during England’s T20I series against the West Indies, and despite controlling his workload by missing games, he wants to play all three ODIs against the Netherlands this week in Amstelveen.
His status as limited-overs captain has been called into question – he has only scored one half-century in international cricket in the previous 18 months, and none in domestic T20 cricket – but he expects to continue at least until the T20 World Cup in October-November.
England’s new white-ball coach, Matthew Mott, backed Morgan during his first news conference on Wednesday. “He always says he wants to be chosen as a batter in that squad on form and merit the whole way through, and if he believes that isn’t the case, he will stand away,” Mott said. “I believe that’s a long way off at that moment.”
“Because they are left-handed, they have a different perspective, a different strategy,” Morgan explained.”Certainly in my experience, left-armers are open to doing more and doing different things, which is great. But the guys who are selected are purely here on merit. Ideally in our best squad, you would like a point of difference: if that’s left-arm or if it’s a guy who bowls 90mph [145kph] plus, then that’s great.”
