WASHINGTON, United States: As per police, Thursday’s shooting at a church in the state of Alabama resulted in the deaths of two people and the injury of one.

The incident occurred at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in the town of Vestavia Hills, and the suspect is in jail, according to a Facebook post by the town’s police department.

The church’s website says that the incident happened when the church was having a potluck dinner.

As per police captain Shane Ware, a lone assailant entered the church and opened fire.

He reported that two of the victims have died, while the third is being treated.

The United States is currently experiencing a particularly horrific period in its gun violence crisis. On May 24, there was a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas that resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two instructors.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 20,000 people have been killed by firearms in the United States since the beginning of the year. This includes suicide deaths.
