Priti Patel said, “We’re committed to the asylum plan”

  • Plans for future flights to Rwanda have begun, Priti Patel has told MPs.
  • The first flight was cancelled minutes before take-off; after a legal challenge.
  • Yvette Cooper said the government knew there were “torture and trafficking victims”; among those the government planned to put on the plane.

Priti Patel told MPs that the government is committed; to transferring asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda; and that arrangements for future flights have commenced.

The home secretary stated, “We will not be stopped from doing the right thing.”

After a last-minute challenge by the European Court of Human Rights; the first flight was cancelled minutes before take-off.

According to Labour’s Yvette Cooper, the government was aware that the passengers on the plane included “torture and trafficking victims.”

The policy, according to the shadow home secretary, is a “shambles” and “shameful.”

The Rwanda asylum proposal, launched by the government in April; aims to send certain asylum seekers who attempt to cross the Channel to the UK on a one-way ticket to Rwanda.
