Earthquakes erupt off coast of Iran, felt throughout Arabian Gulf

DUBAI: Three earthquakes struck off southern Kish Island in Iran on Wednesday, jolting Dubai and other cities across the Arabian Gulf.

According to the US Geological Survey, two magnitude 4.7 earthquakes slammed the island in the important Strait of Hormuz, followed by a magnitude 5.3.

The earthquakes caused no immediate damage in Iran.

According to state news outlet WAM, the UAE’s National Center of Meteorology verified that the earthquake was felt throughout the Emirates.

Iran is located on major seismic faults and averages one earthquake every day. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake levelled the mediaeval city of Bam in 2003, killing 26,000 people.

In 2017, a magnitude 7 earthquake rocked western Iran, killing over 600 people and injuring over 9,000.
