The war for control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas area has centred around Sievierodonetsk. Since the Kremlin launched its invasion on Feb. 24, parts of the city have been decimated in some of the worst fighting.

“The key tactical goal of the occupiers has not changed: they are pressing in Sievierodonetsk, severe fighting is ongoing there – literally for every meter,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiysaid in his nightly video address, adding that Russia’s military was trying to deploy reserve forces to the Donbas.

Russian forces have taken control of the majority of the city, but Ukrainian troops still control an industrial sector and the Azot chemical factory, which is home to hundreds of residents.

According to Gaidai, the Russians destroyed a bridge that connected Sievierodonetsk and its twin city of Lysychansk across the Siverskyi Donets River. Only one of the three bridges remained intact.

“If the bridge collapses as a result of further shelling, the city will be completely cut off. A vehicle will not be able to leave Sievierodonetsk “Gaidai noted the lack of a cease-fire agreement as well as agreed-upon evacuation routes. Scroll down to see the rest of the article.

According to the director of the Sievierodonetsk administration, Ukrainian forces hold around a third of the city, while Russian forces control the other two-thirds.

“Our (forces) are firmly holding the defensive line,” Oleksandr Stryuk said on national television. According to Gaidai, Russian shelling killed a six-year-old child in Lysychansk.
