NEW DELHI: Sonia Gandhi, the leader of India’s biggest opposition party, has been admitted to a New Delhi hospital with COVID-19-related health difficulties, according to her Congress party.

The statement was made via Twitter, but no further information was provided.

Gandhi, the widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is the Congress party’s longest-serving president. The Congress party dominated India for decades after its founders led the country to independence from British colonial authority in 1947.

When the Congress scored a surprising victory in legislative elections in 2004, Gandhi, 76, is credited with revitalising the party.

She would have become India’s first foreign-born and first Roman Catholic prime minister if she had won the election, but she astonished everyone by declining the position and nominating economist Manmohan Singh instead.

Gandhi has visited the United States multiple times in recent years to deal with health difficulties.

Her party’s prospects have plummeted since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist BJP beat it in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
