Apple’s WWDC unveils macOS Ventura to the world

  • The name is likely best known as the headquarters of Patagonia or the title of a great rock song by America.
  • Apple will continue with the tradition of naming its desktop operating systems after landmarks in California.

Here are some of the new features available in macOS Ventura.

Apple’s macOS Ventura, which was launched by Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering and consensus event MVP, has new tools and improved capabilities centred on privacy, continuity, and productivity.

The most significant announcement concerns Safari’s privacy. Passkeys is a password-free method that Apple characterises as “unique digital keys that stay on device and are never stored on a web server, so hackers can’t leak them or trick users into sharing them,” It verifies your identity using biometric features such as Face ID or Touch ID and syncs with your devices using end-to-end encryption.

Tab Groups, which are, indeed, groups of tabs that may be shared for collaboration with others, are another Safari innovation in the new macOS.

Stage Manager is a new desktop utility that arranges active apps and windows into groups on the side of the screen to make multitasking simpler.

Your Mac can identify your iPhone and utilise it as a webcam using Continuity Camera. This feature gives your Mac access to iPhone camera features such as Center Stage, Portrait mode, the Ultra Wide lens, and a new function called Studio Light.

Handoff, which transmits an ongoing FaceTime discussion to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone, is another camera function.

Other improvements in iOS 16 that have been widely publicised include the ability to edit or undo Messages, better Spotlight search, and an iCloud shared photo library.

In the fall of 2022, MacOS will be released as a software upgrade.
