A captured South Korean fighter will stand trial, in the Donetsk region

  • A South Korean fighter kidnapped by pro-Russian forces in Ukraine will be tried in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in the east.
  • It comes after Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner were condemned to death.
  • They were arrested in Mariupol in April amid the heated battle for control of the port city.

According to Interfax news agency, a South Korean fighter kidnapped by pro-Russian forces in Ukraine will be tried in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in the east, according to separatist official Natalia Nikonorova.

“A verdict is being drafted today on a mercenary from South Korea,” Ms. Nikonorova said, according to the news agency.

“He is a Ukrainian citizen who served in the Ukrainian armed forces,”

She did not reveal the fighter’s identity.

It comes after Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner were condemned to death in a pro-Russian court in the Donetsk area this week for being arrested in Mariupol in April amid the heated battle for control of the port city.

Both were found guilty of “mercenary activities and actions aimed at seizing power and overthrowing the constitutional order of the Donetsk People’s Republic,” but their families argue that they were fighting legitimately as members of the Ukrainian army and should be treated as prisoners of war instead.
