Boris Johnson’s new food plan has been branded “bordering on the absurd”; after a leaked copy revealed that it will reject crucial suggestions from an independent assessment; while encouraging people to eat more venison. Calls to increase free school meals and impose a sugar and salt tax appear to have gone unheeded; according to the draught paper. Instead, there will be a consultation on how to assist cows emit less methane; as well as a recommendation that “responsibly procured wild venison” be used more frequently.

In 2019, the government appointed Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of Leon restaurant; to oversee a review of England’s food system to ensure it was “safe, healthy, and affordable” for all. In his final report, published in 2021; he recommended a sugar and salt reformulation levy as a major strategy to help millions of people change their diets.
