- Angus MacLane, the director of Lightyear, recently revealed why he picked Chris Evans over Tim Allen to play Buzz Lightyear in his next film.
- “It was a purposeful decision to alter performers mostly because Tim’s version of Buzz is a little goofier and dumber, and therefore he provides the comedic relief,” the filmmaker reveals in a recent interview with Variety.
However, MacLane informed the newspaper that Buzz is the action hero in this new film.

“He’s serious, ambitious, and amusing, but not in a ridiculous way that detracts from the drama,” he observed.
MacLane praised Evans’ performance, saying, “He has the gravity and that movie star aspect that our character required to distance him and the movie from Tim’s portrayal of the toy in Toy Story.”
The Captain America star also lauded Allen, saying he utilised him as a “guideline” when portraying Buzz.

“I’d be a fool not to credit Allen’s work,” Evans said, adding, “I had to somehow build my own perspective of the character.” I felt comfortable enough to provide my own perspective, and part of that was dropping my vocal tone.”
